Snow Day Signal collects the following information to provide weather forecasts and improve the service:

  • ZIP codes you enter to look up forecasts
  • Location coordinates if you use the "Use My Location" feature (with your permission)
  • Usage data collected automatically through analytics (see Section 3)

We do not collect names, email addresses, account information, or payment information.

2. Local Storage

We use your browser's local storage to:

  • Save your recently searched locations for convenience
  • Cache weather and climate data to improve performance

This data stays on your device and is not transmitted to our servers.

3. Analytics and Advertising

We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site. Google Analytics collects information such as how often users visit, what pages they view, and what other sites they used prior to visiting. We use this information to improve the service. Google Analytics may use cookies and collects only aggregate, anonymized data. You can learn more about how Google uses data at Google's privacy policy.

We may display third-party advertisements on the site. Ad networks may use cookies, web beacons, or similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites. You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting aboutads.info.

4. Third-Party Services

To provide forecasts and related features, we send requests to:

  • National Weather Service (NWS) - weather forecasts and alerts
  • Open-Meteo - historical weather observations
  • NOAA - 30-year climate normals
  • Zippopotam.us - ZIP code lookups
  • Iowa Environmental Mesonet (IEM) - snowfall reports and historical weather alerts
  • Google Analytics - site usage analytics (see Section 3)

These services have their own privacy policies. We only send location data (coordinates or ZIP codes) necessary for forecasts.

5. Data Retention

We do not retain personal user data on our servers. Analytics data is retained by Google per their data retention policies. Cached data in your browser's local storage can be cleared at any time through your browser settings.

6. Children's Privacy

Snow Day Signal does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The service is designed for parents and guardians to check school closure predictions.

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy as needed. Changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above.
